Trenchless Technology
For economic, non-disruptive pipe or cable installation, trenchless systems are the obvious choice. Taking the option to avoid a trench whenever possible will avoid traffic delays and service interruptions. It will improve community relations, take account of environmental concerns and time constraints and is proven to be operationally safer.
Meehan Drilling Ltd has the technology, the expertise and the specialist knowledge to provide a first class service. Our Portfolio boasts many kilometers of water, gas, telecommunication and sewer pipelines and a variety of successfully completed diverse and challenging crossings. Dependent on ground conditions, we can offer diameters up to 800mm and distances of up to 400 metres.
Pipe installations in rock are also possible with the addition of Mud-motors and Wire Line Tracking Systems.
With over 30 years experience of drilling a wide variety of bedrocks, Meehan Drilling can quickly adapt to changing geology.

Directional Drilling and Pipe Bursting can be used to replace and renew many kilometres of pipework. With correct preparation up to 200 metres of pipe (>180mm) can be placed in the ground in a single working day. Two holes must be excavated; a launch and reception pit, and on average are no bigger than two square metres.
For pipe greater than 180mm in diameter, it is necessary to pre ream the bore before pulling the pipe to reduce the possibility of road heave and potentially getting the pipe stuck.
This method of pipe installation is utilised to install water, gas electric, telecommunication and sewer pipes. In special circumstances graded sewers can be installed.
Specialist Crossings

Trenchless technologys prevail when crossings of Roads, rivers, railways and any other obstacles to which conventional open cut methods are not applicable. Everything from the smallest bi-road to the largest rivers have been successfully traversed from installing water supplies to multiple communication ducting.

Simatrex is a system that allows the installation of steel pipes through unconsolidated ground conditions and solid rock. The principle involves using a down the hole hammer with a similtanous bit and drive shoe inserted into a steel pipe. A modified auger boring machine and air compressor power the hammer. The system has successfully installed pipes in ground varying from running sand and gravel to solid bedrock all within the same crossing.
Pipe diameter ranges from 150mm to 450mm over distances of 50 metres.
Preparation involves digging a pit on longer than 9 metres to line and level of the crossing.

In the environmental remediation industry, horizontal wells provide unique characteristics and advantages than can improve the effectiveness of established soil and groundwater clean up technologies.
Potential areas for horizontal directional drilling installed horizontal wells Include:
- Groundwater supply and irrigation
- Environmental remediation
- Dewatering and slope stabilisation
- Landfill leachate collection
- Saltwater intrusion and beach regeneration
Horizontal well technology has been incorporated into many current environmental remediation applications such as in-situ bioremedation, air sparging, vacuum extraction, soil flushing, free product recovery etc.
